U18'S WIN Severnside!

On the 24th & 25th August, the GGU, Worcestershire, Glamorgan and Gwent met at Ross-on-Wye GC to compete for the annual  U18 Severnside 4 Counties Tournament.

The teams arrived in some very good weather conditions and to a course that was in excellent condition despite the recent wet spells that most courses have suffered from. The GGU team were represented by Ed Fry (Captain), Ash Millington, Toby Janes, Leo Powell, Ollie Crowley, Danny Townsend, Joel Warne & Will Rawlins and faced Gwent in the first match on Thursday afternoon with Ash leading the team out. Some great golf was played by all the boys and the GGU team came out on top winning by 6.5 v 0.5. The earlier match between Glamorgan & Worcestershire was won by Glamorgan 6 v 1 leaving the GGU on top of the table above Glamorgan on “goal“ difference,

After a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast in the local Premier Inn, the boys arrived in great spirits to face Glamorgan in the first of their matches on the Friday. This was the crunch match given the results from Thursday and Toby James led the team out but just came up short losing 3&1 in his match . However, the scores were soon level again when Ollie Crowley won by the same margin but with Ed Fry losing 2 down in his match, Glamorgan edged in front again. Ash Millington was the 4th game out and he won his match to level the scores again and Will Rawlins was last out but won his match 4&3 leaving the GGU one game ahead with just Leo Powell and Danny Townsend out on the golf course needing only one point between them to win the match. Leo was 2 up with 2 to play but lost the last 2 holes to halve his match and Danny was all square on the 17th tee after winning the previous 3 holes with 2 birdies & an eagle. So it was still all to play for and with Danny winning the 17th we were guaranteed the half point to secure a magnificent 4 v 3 win over Glamorgan

With a very quick 30 minute turnaround to the match against Worcestershire in the afternoon, the boys grabbed some lunch and all  managed to arrive for their afternoon games within the allotted time. Toby again led the team out and came up against some stiff opposition in Cassius Blake who shot -8 for his round resulting in a 3 & 1 defeat for Toby. All the other boys made solid starts and ran out winners in their games so the GGU ended up winning the match 6 v 1 and so winning the tournament overall having won all 3 matches.

A really great performance from all the GGU boys and our thanks go to all the players and officials from Glamorgan, Gwent and Worcestershire for playing the games in the right spirit. Special thanks go to Ross-on-Wye GC for hosting the event and preparing the Course in such excellent condition. Many thanks also to all the Catering staff at Ross for looking after us so well and making sure we were all fed and watered throughout the 2 days.

Finally, the event was organised by the GGU on this occasion and both Dean Newbold and Chris Boyle did a first class job and must be congratulated on making sure the event ran so smoothly. A particular mention also goes to our County President, Dereck Butler, who attended on both days and provided some great support to the team overall.

Our next U18 match is this Friday (1st September) when we play Gwent at Gloucester GC in the Channel League and supporters are more than welcome.
