Second Team VICTORIOUS in Wessex Salver

The 2nd Team travelled to Creigiau Golf Club at the weekend to participate in the Wessex Salver in a 4-way tournament against reigning holders Glamorgan, Gwent and Brecon & Radnor. The format was changed this year to accommodate more Counties from a matchplay competition to strokeplay with scores being made up from 3 out of 4 to count in foursomes medal in the morning round and 6 out of 8 scores to count in singles medal from the afternoon.

The course was challenging and with half the holes having only recently been sanded for course maintenance, tight tree lined fairways meaning accuracy and patience was key, knowing what a good score in the foursomes was going to be hard to judge.

However the scoring from both Glamorgan and Gloucestershire was excellent, with a Par 71 the scores from the Gloucestershire team were, Toby Janes and Charlier Taylor-Madge 70, Neil Tocknell and Lewis Stalley 71, Joe Biscoe and Ethan Holway 71, James Bath and Dave Allison 77.

With best 3 to count the scores after the morning foursomes were very close:- Gloucestershire 212, Glamorgan 213, Gwent 233, Brecon and Radnor 236.

So all was down to the singles with just a slender 1 shot advantage the team were sent out with clear instructions that every shot was important and all 8 scores could make a difference if scores were level after taking the best 6 of 8.

With 1 player from each County making up a fourball every player knew that they had to try and beat or match the scores of their Glamorgan counterpart to give Gloucestershire the best chance of success.

The scores were fantastic with both Lewis Stalley and Ethan Holway carding 4 under 67's, Neil Tocknell 69, Toby Janes 70, Joe Biscoe 71, Charlie Taylor-Madge 72, James Bath and Dave Allison both shooting 2 over 73's. With best 6 of 8 to count the Gloucestershire team returned a very impressive 10 under. This scoring was too hot for the other 3 counties to contend with and Glamorgan could only manage 6 over with their best 6 scores meaning Gloucestershire won the Wessex Salver by a very impressive 17 shots overall.

Final total scores:- Gloucestershire 628, Glamorgan 645, Gwent 683, Brecon and Radnor 716.

A terrific team effort so well done and thank you all.

Special thanks to Alan Robinson and Ian Hughes for their continued support to myself and the team and help over the weekend.

Neil Tocknell    2nd Team Captain
