Gloucestershire U14's battle hard against Somerset

With summer holidays upon us with some very un summer like weather the U14’s arrived  at The Bristol to take on Somerset hoping that the breeze kept the clouds moving and the sun out

With both teams fairly even in handicap it was decided to play the matches off scratch with the boys opening tee shots in the morning foursomes worthy of scratch golfers. Captain Oscar and Daniel soon built up a strong lead in the 9 hole sprint before being pinned back while Jack and partner Will took hold of their match with strong play into the short 6th. The following matches saw Alex and Luis swapping holes with their opponents while Thomas and Sonny were in a match that never seemed to see anything but fairways and greens. With the lead match soon getting a 3&3 point on the board the second match showed true grit after losing 8 to get a half but some strong putts in the last 2 games saw Somerset gain the advantage 2.5 to 1.5 after the foursomes

After lunch the weather threatened a dull afternoon for the singles but Oscar's performance in the opening match was anything but going under par to wrap his match early 7&6 while Will and Luis started to build strong leads over the front 9. As the sun made an appearance Daniel needed every ounce his strong driving with his opponent holing some great putts as did Jack managing the strong breeze as he gave up many yards off the tee although in the last match the boys kept just finding fairway after fairway

With the temperature rising Will and Luis kept their strong leads and got a couple more points on the board while Daniel fought round the tough 15, 16 and 17th to take his match down 18 but to no avail with Jack battling through them too before chancing a fairway wood onto the 18th green to close his match out

With Alex and Thomas just not able to overturn strong leads from their opponents it all came down to the last match which by the short 14th looked a tough ask but a chip in birdie on 14 and 40 foot par save on 17 meant Sonny kept things alive for the whole match

With both teams now waiting round the 18th green Sonny and Harley, as they’d done all day found the short grass and after laying up Sonny preceded to hit a great approach to 10 feet. With his opponent a few feet away for 4 Sonny rolled his par save down but its stayed wide and Somerset claimed the spoils by a point

Needless the team spirit was great and the boys from both sides played in a truly competitive friendly manner with so many matches going to the last or late rallies being made

Congratulations to Dave and his Somerset side for some great golf  Huge thanks to The Bristol GC for providing a great venue  and great food as well as a huge thanks to all the parents for not only getting the boys there but providing such great and much appreciated support

For some of the lads we’ve now got a quick turnaround taking on Somerset U12’s at Burnham next Thursday before we return to U14 action against Glamorgan at Chipping Sodbury
