Great start for 2nd Team in Wessex League

The 2nd Team travelled to Cardigan Golf Club for the first game of the Wessex League campaign against Dyfed at the weekend hoping for a strong start to their league season.

The morning foursomes was a very closely fought contest with lead off pair Harry Griffiths and Kieran Sutton seeing off the Dyfed top pair 2&1 only for Dyfed to strike straight back by winning the 2nd match 3&2 against the Gloucestershire pairing of Charlie Taylor-Madge and Toby Janes. The 3rd game was a very close contest with Ryan Prosser and Neil Tocknell in control of their match for most of the game only for the Dyfed pair to find a couple of late birdies to level the match late on resulting in a half. In the final foursomes match of the morning Chris Shanks and Adam Sutton produced some very solid golf to bring home the point by wining 3&2 giving Gloucestershire a slim lead after the morning session of 2 1/2 points to 1 1/2 points.

After a light lunch and changing weather conditions which saw everything from strong winds, sun, rain and sea mist covering the course at times a strong singles display was requested to ensure an away win and that is exactly what was delivered by the team. An excellent bounce back win by Toby Janes against a superb young Welsh amateur junior by 2&1 set the platform for some terrific results by the Gloucestershire team. A thumping 5&4 win by Charlie Taylor-Madge followed by double wins for the day for Chris Shanks who won 3&2 and Adam Sutton who won 4&3 meant Gloucestershire were assured of victory. A narrow 1 down defeat for Harry Griffiths on the last hole and defeat for the returning Kieran Sutton into the County set up 3&2 were cancelled out by victories of 3&2 for Ryan Prosser and 4&3 by Neil Tocknell ensured Gloucestershire won the singles 6 points to 2 points and the match overall by 8 1/2 points to 3 1/2 points.

Special thanks to Alan Robinson for all his hard work and the support of vice president Ian Hughes and ex president Steve Sheppard along with his partner Liz who were in attendance to cheer on the team. I would also like to thank my players for giving up their bank holiday weekend and making the long journey, it was worth it team so thank you all as everyone contributed to our success.

A final thank you must go to Pat and his staff at Cardigan Golf Club who really couldn't have done anymore to make us feel welcome the whole weekend along with the Cardigan members that were watching. if you are in the area then you must pay them a visit and play the course also.
