1st Team ease their way into 2023 Channel League Season

County 1st Team eased their way into the 2023 Channel League Seson playing Dorset at Ferndown.

Our Channel League season got underway when our 1st Team travelled away to Dorset. The match was scheduled to be played at Bridport. However, due to the heavy rain fall over the last week, the match was transferred to Ferndown at the last minute. We received an extremely warm welcome from the club members and the Dorset Executive. I will say that Dorset were very excited to return to the Channel League after almost 30 years absence. The match began in what can only be described as Baltic conditions - my 9 layers just didn’t work. Through 9 holes of the foursomes, things were looking particularly bad, for what was a very strong Gloucestershire team, in fact with about an hour to go it looked as though we would lose the morning session 4 ½ to ½ . However, Jake Phillips and Josh Millington played their way out of a 2-hole deficit to a 2&1 win and with Calum Mortimore & Will Mullins now firmly in control of their game the session finished 3-2 to Dorset. To note, only 2 of our team had previously played Ferndown. This showed in the scoring.

After the demolishing of a 5-star lunch and a quick chat, the team seemed very buoyant indeed. The happiness started to turn into holes won with, Phillips 4 up, Josh Millington A/S, Mortimore 4 up and Workman & Bell being 1 up. Things looked to be on the up through 6 holes. It didn’t stop there, as Nick Day 2 down through 6 turned on the after burners, winning his match 3 & 2. Will Mullins also 2 down after 6 showed no concern whatsoever, and it showed by being A/S by the 9th and then just kicking on for a relatively easy win..

My thanks go to the members of Ferndown for supporting the cause at such short notice, the catering staff for simply amazing food and to the greens staff for a course in stunning condition. My thanks also go to our Ian & Mary Cornwell and Dereck & Pat Butler for all their support over the weekend.
