GLOUCESTERSHIRE SENIORS STUNNED BY DEVON

At a blustery Lansdown , Gloucestershire Seniors met up with their Devon adversaries expecting to continue their fine start to the 2022 Channel League season.  Both sides have started this year by inflicting heavy defeats on their early opponents and this promised to be an interesting encounter.

The morning greensomes were taken 5 nil by Devon with all matches being close.  The tone was set in the first match with Devon’s Peter Bicknell and Chris Audin beating Steve Yorke and Mike Jarvis 3 and 1.  Yorke and Jarvis are both in great form and the win for the Devon pair was impressive to say the least.  For Gloucestershire to now get anything out of this match was possible but rather unlikely.

In the afternoon singles Steve Yorke did what every player being placed in the top match is supposed to do and he only needed thirteen holes to take care of Rick Osbourne.  Devon’s Mark Evans needed to be at his best to beat Mike Jarvis and he took the second match 2 and 1.  With the next four matches going to Devon, the contest was effectively over but Rich Wood continued his winning ways with a 7 and 6 victory over Colin Papworth.  Gloucestershire’s only other score was a half from captain Nick Morris who needed to overcome a four hole deficit against Tim Jones.

So, a 12 ½ to 2 ½ defeat is certainly a dent in the title aspirations of the Gloucestershire Seniors and on current form Devon would now be favourites.  The manner in which Devon won this match was impressive against a Gloucestershire team who, to be frank played well but couldn’t overcome the superior golf from Devon on the day.
