Gloucestershire Seniors WIN against Somerset
The County Seniors had their first Channel League match away against Somerset on Monday 12th May at Saltford Golf Club. It was a slight home advantage for one of our players as Matt Stanford is an Honorary Life Member of Saltford. Matt gave the Team a list of the right places to hit tee shots on each of the holes, but unfortunately despite his course knowledge he and Dave Law lost the opening Greensomes 2&1. In the second Greensomes, Nick Barwood and Tim Rogers managed a half and when Captain Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle failed to recover from losing the first two holes with a 2&1 loss, things looked to be going in Somerset's favour. Fortunately, the last two Greensomes produced Gloucestershire victories with Chris Newman and Steve Yorke winning 2&1 and Ken Madden and Mike Burris winning 3&2. So, it was all even at lunchtime.
The afternoon singles saw Matt Stanford lead the team away looking for his first victory for the County Seniors. When Matts opponent birdied the first two holes it looked as though he would struggle to break his duck, but some excellent golf followed for Matt to run out a winner by a comfortable 5&4. Matts win seemed to inspire the Team and Nick Barwood, Tim Rogers and Dave Law won the next three matches to give the County a commanding lead. Chris Newman was unfortunate to lose a ball on the 18th to lose 1 down, but Steve Yorke, Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle all managed to win to give the team and unassailable lead. In the last two matches Ken Madden lost, but Mike Burris gave the County the 8th win of the afternoon singles for a 10.5-4.5 victory. It was fantastic to see every team member contribute to the Team score and hopefully this fine victory will be the start of a tilt at the Channel League title.
The next match is against Gwent at The Kendleshire on 19th May. Thanks to Somerset for their warm welcome and the match played in a great spirit and to Saltford who provided an excellent course and catering.
