Gloucestershire Senior Men WIN against Worcestershire
In the County Seniors last match before the Channel League starts Gloucestershire ran out winners against a strong Worcestershire Team.
After three matches in the morning greensomes things didn’t appear to be going Gloucestershire’s way. Matt Stanford, making his Seniors debut, partnered Dave Law and they lost 2/1 in a high quality match. Chris Newman and Guy Whittern registered the Counties first score with a half and Steve York and Nick Barnwood also succumbed to a 2&1 defeat. The ship was steadied by some fine play from Nigel Gravelle and Tim Clink winning 2 up before Ken Madden and Mike Jarvis won 3&2 and Rich Wood and Andy Wright won 1up. So at lunch, Gloucestershire led 3.5-2.5.
The fourball better ball format in the afternoon meant a shuffling of the Gloucestershire order with Chris Newman and Guy Whittern leading the way but losing narrowly 2 down to a strong Worcestershire pair. Matt Stanford and Dave Law ran into a barrage of birdies, no gimme’s and a round of silence to lose 4&3. Fortunately, the teams tail wagged again with the mercurial Nigel Gravelle and Tim Clink dovetailing well to run out winners by 3&2. Experience shone through when Steve York and Nick Barnwood won 1up, and when Ken Madden and Mike Jarvis won 5&4 Gloucestershire had won the match. There was icing on the cake when the final match involving Rich Wood and Andy Wright delivered a 4&3 win making the final result Gloucestershire 7.5, Worcestershire 4.5.
A great result that sets the team up nicely for the first Channel league match against Somerset at Saltford in a couple of weeks’ time. Thanks to Gloucester Golf Club for hosting the match.
