Gloucestershire Seniors lose to Cornwall

Match report Gloucestershire Seniors v Cornwall.    Channel League at Lansdown 19th August 2024

Gloucestershire Seniors took on South West Champions Cornwall in their penultimate Channel League match at Lansdown on Monday 19th August.

Having had three players in a play-off for the South West Seniors Championship, Cornwall were always going to be stern opposition for Gloucestershire.  However, when Nick Barwood and Steve Yorke showed a total lack of respect for two of the Cornish triumvirate, Gloucestershire took an early lead in the morning greensomes.  Hopes were high that the second pair, (local player and County Seniors Champion Ken Madden with ex Lansdown member Simon Hale) could double the lead but “Chuck” Norris and Shaun Mathews took the first point of the day for Cornwall.  Mike Burris and Mike Jarvis won impressively against their opposition and Tim Clink with regular sidekick Nigel Gravelle took a brave half to ensure Gloucestershire went to the lunch break all square with Cornwall.

The afternoon singles would be tough, to say the least but Nick Barwood was head and shoulders the player of the day taking Cornwall stalwart Simon Knowles for the second time.  It is a compliment to Simon Knowles that this was viewed as such an impressive performance by Nick Barwood.  After the Gloucestershire win in the first match it was only Tim Clink and the impressive David Law who won their matches although Simon Hale stubbornly halved with England International Ian Ashenden.

With the final score  9/6 to Cornwall, Gloucestershire need to beat Devon at The Kendleshire on September 9th to salvage some pride before heading to Weston Super Mare on 19th September for the Southern Counties Foursomes finals.
