Gloucestershire Golf Union

U16's defeated by Somerset (CL)

The course was presented in very good condition. We were expecting a little sunshine however the clouds loomed heavy overhead for most of the day.

With quite a lot of slopes to contend with on the golf course, keeping the ball on the fairway and especially the green on hole 15 was a challenge. At times the behaviour of greens reminded of The Open.

We began the morning with Foursomes match-play. It didn’t go our way, we lost 4.5 to 0.5 however Oscar Horler and Ben Warwicker worked hard to keep their match All Square. We went into the afternoon with high hopes for our singles match-play. Course knowledge was a great asset for Somerset and unfortunately Gloucestershire struggled to get any momentum in the early matches. We had a little hope towards the back of the field however we ran out of steam and lost 8.5 to 1.5.

Thomas Champan dug deep to turn his match around and won 1up, Jago Keyter managed to get over the line keeping his match All Square and won half a point.

Unfortunately it just wasn’t our day, Somerset played great golf, they had the upper hand and held us at bay throughout the day. Our U16 team showed great abtitude and level of application throughout. Their spirits were high, you can see that from their smiles in our post-match photo.

Quite a few parents stayed to watch the golf and spent most of their day boosting morale and ball spotting which was a great help. Vice President Richard Salter was on hand to keep the ship steady an offer words of confidence. Thank you to Brad and his Somerset team of helpers and to The Mendip who gave us a warm welcome and provided pleasant hospitality.
