SOUTHERN COUNTIES FOURSOMES FINAL       ELY CITY GOLF CLUB 19th SEPTEMBER 2023

Gloucestershire Seniors travelled to Ely City Golf Club to take on the other regional qualifiers, Kent, Sussex and Cambridgeshire in the Southern Counties Foursomes final on 19th September.

The team travelled early to ensure that the practice day on Monday was fully maximised.  However, due to heavy overnight storms the course was water-logged but there was no dampening of the desire within the Gloucestershire team.

With each team playing ten foursomes matches over two rounds it was going to be an arduous task for all players in high winds.  Kent were the team who coped best and although they only dropped a half point against Gloucestershire’s Vernon Chappell and Nick Morris they won all their other matches to take a clear lead into the second round of matches.  In the other morning matches Brian Mitten and Mike Jarvis halved against Cambridgeshire but Nick Barwood and Tim Rogers impressively overpowered their Cambridgeshire opponents in the top match.

The afternoon matches yielded just two more half points from Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle and then Nick Barwood and Tim Rogers showed their true ability by remaining unbeaten on the day which was a great achievement bearing in mind the quality of the opposition in this event.

Congratulations to Kent who were the eventual winners taking 8 out of a possible ten points.

The season now draws to a close for Gloucestershire Seniors.  It has been a season of close results and a season which could have delivered so much more.  The standard of golf improves every year at this level and plans will soon be in place to go again next year.
