U16's beat Somerset in Channel League

A strong GGU U16 Team gathered at The Bristol Golf Club for our latest Channel League fixture against Somerset.

Ambrose Eaves and Jaxson Perry lead us off in the morning foursomes and, after a very tight match, took the first point of the day with a 3&1 win. The second pairing of Jackson Wojahn-Parker (Captain) and Charlie Jenkins were, unfortunately, on the wrong side of a 3&2 scoreline in another game that was nip and tuck throughout. The new pairing of Reggie Phelps and Oscar Horler combined well in the closest game of the morning, eventually winning 1 up. Tom Chapman, and Riley Wood continued their successful partnership with a comfortable 3&2 win and our final pairing of Zak Armstrong and Ethan Jay were in excellent form to record the biggest win of the morning, 5&4. This left us with a healthy 4 – 1 lead as we went in to lunch but we knew the afternoon would be tricky.

Jaxson lead us out in singles and took his 2nd point of the day with a 2&1 win. Ambrose soon followed with a 3&2 victory and Jackson made it 3 with a comfortable 4&3 win to make up for his morning defeat. Both Reggie and Riley secured 2up wins, playing solid golf throughout and Charlie and Tom also recorded good wins, 6&4 and 4&3 respectively. Ethan unfortunately ran out of steam, going down 3&1 and Zak battled to record a half. This left Oscar as the last match on the course and he closed out his match in excellent style with tee a shot to 6 feet on the tough par 3 16th for a 3&2 win.

The overall score of 12.5 to 2.5 made it look a lot easier than it actually was. As the singles worked their way through the 9th green there was barely more than a hole in any game and, at that stage, it looked as though the match could go either way. Somerset fielded what was, in overall terms, a relatively young team and the players in the later order should take great credit from the way they acquitted themselves and stuck at their task.

The match was played in excellent spirit by both teams and it was great to see so many parents out supporting. We would like to thank The Bristol Golf Club for hosting us and also our President, Dereck, who is a great supporter of all of our teams.
