Match report - Friendly U16 match against Glamorgan on 27th August 2021

The GGU U16 County team played their first friendly match of the season against Glamorgan at Whitchurch GC in Cardiff in good conditions with all the boys arriving in good spirits and ready for the challenge ahead. Captain Jamie Berry picked the morning foursomes pairings and when the teams were exchanged it was clear that the day would be hard-fought with some of the Glamorgan boys fresh back from a Welsh U16 match against Scotland at Troon.

The results sheet is attached below and Gloucestershire came out on top in the morning foursomes winning 3 - 2. Jamie Berry and Danny Townsend led the way with a 3&2 victory, quickly followed by Leo Powell & Ollie Crowley winning by the same margin. Unfortunately, Dan Berry & Ethan Holway lost 4&3 in the next match but Enzo Cryer & James Austen soon extended the lead with a 3&2 victory in their match with Harvey Taylor & Sam Edlin losing in the final match of the morning foursomes by 3&2.

So with the match well poised for the afternoon singles, the boys set about eating their lunch of chips and sandwiches before commencing battle in the afternoon singles in what proved to be a real nail-biting affair for all concerned!

Glamorgan got off to a strong start winning 2 of the 3 matches against Jamie Barry and Ollie Crowley but Danny Townsend in the 2nd match earned a great half being 1 down with 2 to play. Leo Powell, Ethan Holway & Enzo Cryer all won their singles to put Gloucestershire in prime position for a win but unfortunately, Dan Berry, Harvey Taylor & Sam Edlin all lost their matches so we needed a win in the last match to secure a half. Thankfully James Austen came up with the goods winning the final match of the afternoon singles so the spoils were shared 7.5 v 7.5 and a hard-earned half was secured. The boys can be very proud of the way they fought to the end against a good Glamorgan side and the numerous debutants in the side will certainly have learnt a great deal from this experience which can only be good for the future.

All the boys and myself would like to thank John Pugh & James Coombs and all the Glamorgan boys for their hospitality on the day and playing the game in a great spirit. We would also like to thank Whitchurch GC for looking after us on the day, presenting the course in really good condition and making sure we were all suitably fed and watered all day. A special thanks also to Jamie Berry who gave the after-match speech.

Our next match is a Channel League match also against Glamorgan at the Bristol on Sunday 5th Sept (this Sunday) and any supporters who would like to come along and support would be more than welcome to come along.
