A very chilly start to the morning at Forest Hills. However this didn’t detract from the keenness from both sides to get on with it.
On arrival, we couldn’t believe what a fantastic transformation the new owners have made in the last year. One thing that hasn’t changed though, is the very warm welcome from all the staff and members.
Our 1st team was depleted by illness and availability which made selection somewhat difficult. However, having selected 4 juniors, 3 of which have never place adult golf made for an interesting team sheet.
The morning foursomes were a sedate start which looked to be even through 9 holes but, after my usual boring words of wisdom, our boys moved up a couple of gears to take the morning 4-1.
The afternoon got off to a dream start with the top 3 games winning handsomely with Harvey finishing at pace on the 12th, Day romping some fantastic scoring through the mid holes and Josh Millington always in charge. Both Mortimore and Fry (debut) had very close games which just tilted Cornwalls' way. Ash Millington (debut) went 5up through 5 and romped home with an 8/7 win being something like 4 under par, despite missing 2 very short putts in front of the Captain. Our last debutant, Toby Janes had a cracking match which went to the last with Toby 1up but, despite making a par he lost the hole to a 20ft snake of a birdie but nevertheless a great result. James Bath and Mike Day (both under par) had great wins. Neil Tocknell had a real ding ding match against the very seasoned and one of the all time Cornish greats Rob Macgregor. The match was both intense and exhilarating with birdies galore, it could have gone either way.
Of real note was how our 3 junior debutants, the oldest being just 16 performed at this level against a very seasoned Cornwall side. Our future looks bright.
Finally my thanks go to Forest hills for their outstanding support on the day. Catering led by Jean and and pro shop with Jamie Dick could do no more. The course was in great condition with the greens reaching quite a pace which initial caught out both teams on the day. Thanks guys for making our day so special.
