Gloucestershire Seniors took on Gloucestershire Ladies Seniors in an annual friendly fixture at Lilley Brook Golf Club on Thursday 14th April.  In a keenly fought encounter the men were comfortable winners against a very strong Ladies team.  However, the result in this fixture is less important than the opportunity to establish new pairings for the competitive season ahead.  Seniors Captain, Nick Morris has introduced three new team members for this year, all with handicaps of scratch or better.  The expectations for this season are understandably high and competition for selection has rarely been tougher.

In the match itself, the top pairing of Brian Mitten and Tim Clink were comfortable winners but given they are both Lilley Brook locals their victory was an expectation rather than a surprise but that took nothing away from a spirited fight from their opponents Alison Kelly and Emma Brereton.  Carl Gyde and Simon Hale halved their match against Corrinne Durber and Ruth Hughes in a very competitive encounter.  The Ladies’ only win came in the last match where Wendy Bond and Mary Hayes beat Nick Morris and John Lannon.  The shot making from these two ladies was exceptional and at a time when Morris and Lannon felt they could get something from the match the ladies simply increased the pressure and hit the shots that mattered when it mattered.

A big thank you to Lilley Brook for hosting the match.  The course was in superb condition for early season and things are looking good for the forthcoming County Championship in May.

Nick Morris

Seniors Captain.
