Gloucestershire U18's lose to Glamorgan

The forecast was for a bright sunny day but the reality was a rather dull, dank day and not that conducive to good golf but it was the same for both sides and all the boys arrived in good spirits looking forward to the challenge ahead.

This was a re-arranged fixture from earlier in September and with only 2 weeks’ notice, a number of the squad were unfortunately unavailable, so it was a new look team with 5 under 16’s drafted into the team. That said, it was still a strong, competitive team and hopes of a win were high

Jaxson Perry & Charlie Ford led the way in the morning foursomes but were soundly beaten on the 13th Green. Next up was Ambrose Eaves (Captain) and Felix Chippendale who suffered a similar fate losing on the 15th Green before 2 of the U16s, Jack Lockwood & Ernie Elford, put some GGU points on the board winning 3&1. Next up was James Sayce & Billy Walker who lost 4 &3 followed by Charlie Pearce-Ward and Oli Walker who manged ti secure a half on the final hole with an excellent birdie 3.  So at lunch, the overall score was 3.5 v 1.5 in Glamorgan’s favour and it was all to play for in the afternoon singles.

After a lunch of Sandwiches & Chips, it was back out and Jaxson was out top, playing against Will Pontin. Jaxson battled hard all afternoon and was one under when the match finished on the 15th but it was not enough against a very tough opponent. Next up was Felix and he had a very good match against his opponent hitting 3 birdies on the bounce from the 14th to get back to all square but unfortunately just missed out on the last. Charlie kept our hopes alive with a very good 2&1 win but unfortunately all of our next 4 matches were lost putting the match out of reach. Jack lost 5&4, Ambrose 3&1, Ernie 1 down and James 4&2 before Billy secured another point for the team with a very good 2 up victory on his debut. We also lost the last two games with Oli losing 7&5 and Charlie 2 down thereby leaving the overall result 11.5 v 3.5 and a very well deserved win for Glamorgan.

James Pontin ran the Glamorgan team on the day and did an excellent job so our thanks go out to him and all the Glamorgan boys for their hospitality on the day. All the matches were played in the right spirit and all the boys should be proud of how they represented their Counties.

Unfortunately there was no catering available in the club in the evening so James organised individual Pizzas from the local Dominoes which went down very well indeed. Whilst eating, both Captains, Will Pontin for Glamorgan and Ambrose for the GGU, gave their speeches and thanks to them both for doing the honours. Thanks also go to Creigiau GC for hosting the event at such short notice and to everyone at the club for allowing us to use the course.

Finally, many thanks as always to all the parents who brought and picked up the boys on the day as without this level of support we just wouldn’t have a team.  Thanks also to all the U16s who stepped up to play in this match and its good to see so many of them coming through the ranks as this will certainly mean the U18 team will be stronger in the next few years

The playing season is now over but our next big event is the Annual presentation evening at The Kendleshire on the 7th November at 7pm to which all the boys are invited to attend.

In the week following the presentation evening,  we will be announcing the GGU U18 squad for 2026, so plenty to kook forward to!
