Henbury Golf Club finish Second in National Event

English Men's Champion Club

Played at The Oaks Golf Club near York, Gloucestershire were represented by Henbury G.C. the team being Nick Day, Mike Day and Calum Mortimer who had qualified by winning The Winterbotham Trophy at the GGU County Championships.

The team enjoyed a practice round on Friday before the competition started on Saturday morning with Henbury Tee Times of 10:30 (Callum), 12:30 (Nick) and 1:20 (Mike). Saturday was forecast to be wet and deteriorating later in the day. Sure enough as Nick teed off at 12:30 the heavens opened and continued that way, while I have seen greens squeegeed before I have never before seen tees squeegeed!. Playing through the worst of the weather the team returned a very creditable +8 total for the three team members. This placed us 3rd behind Rotherham (the Yorkshire representatives), who had teed off early, at +3 and Workington at +5.

Sunday was bright and cheerful and with tee times of 9:10, 9:20 and 9:30 the team were off to an early start and were playing well in the much better conditions. Finishing their round  the team sat as leaders in the clubhouse and were watching the “live” scoring (updated following the 5th, 11th and 16th holes) intently on their phones. Workington were fading but Moor Hall had a good second round and also finished at +12, Rotherham were shipping shots but not enough and eventually finished with +10 to win the tournament. Nick, Mike and Calum finished a very creditable tied 2nd with Moor Hall at +12.

Nick Day had a remarkable front nine on the final day, shooting a 6-under front nine (30) on his way to a round of 68 (-4), which was enough to earn him the individual title across 36 holes by two shots, a very good -5
