On Sunday 21st September, 45 of the best U16 golfers in the Country took to the brilliantly presented Minchinhampton GC to compete for The Ken Newman Salver and the title of West of England U16 Champion.
After the mornings play there was a three way tie at the top on 69 (-2). The three players were Albie Beeston (North Hants), Oliver Badger (Enville) and Riley Banks (Wrag Barn). Just a stroke further back on 70 (-1) were Leo Cahi (Cottesmore), Justin Chenu (Rochester & Cobham), Arthur Saunders (Littlestone), Jaxson Perry (The Kendleshire) and Thomas Prescott (Manchester). There were many further players within striking distance of the leaders heading into round 2.
The afternoon was again a good test with lots of good scores but it was Oliver Badger who won the Ken Newman Salver after adding a best of the day 66 (-5) to go with his mornings round of 69 to give him a 36 hole total of 135 (-7). A very well done to Oliver!
In second was Albie Beeston who's 36 hole total of 135 saw him two strokes behind Oliver. Back in third was Justin Chenu on 138 and then in fourth and fifth respectively were Mariella Buchanan (Bristol & Clifton) and Jaxson Perry, both on 139.
Our thanks go to all at Minchinhampton GC for their hospitality and for presenting the golf course fit for an event of this level. We hope to see those eligible to play again next year and our final thanks go to all the Parents/Carers who travelled the length of the Country to enable the players to take part.
