GGU Seniors narrow defeat against Wiltshire

The Gloucestershire Seniors arrived at Lansdown GC for their match against Wiltshire needing a win to boost their chances of winning the Channel League.

The morning Greensomes were a close affair with the Team being led out by South-West Champion Matt Stanford and his new partner Mike Burris. A close match ensued with the Wiltshire pair reading greens via Google eventually resulting in a 1 up win for Gloucestershire. The next three matches went the way of Wiltshire with even the dream team of Tim Clink and Nigel Gravelle losing whilst playing their worst golf of the season but Andy Wright and Rich Wood left Gloucestershire still in touch at lunchtime but with work to do being 3-2 down.

Ken Madden led the team out in the singles on his home course. Having not won a singles match this season it was a risk given he would be playing a Welsh International but Ken played superbly to deliver the first point of the afternoon to Gloucestershire. Matt Stanford delivered the next win and when Tim Rogers prevailed 1 up, Gloucestershire had taken three points from the first four singles. More was to come as Mike Burris made a superb birdie at the last hole to halve his match and when Captain, Tim Clink, won 5&4. Gloucestershire had taken four and a half points from the first six matches in the afternoon. Just a point and a half required from the remaining four matches. Nigel Gravelle battled hard in a closely contested match. Agonisingly his putt of 30 feet on the last to win his match horseshoed and another half came the way of Gloucestershire. So five points from the first seven matches. In the eighth match Steve Yorke was one down playing the last and when his opponent hooked his tee shot into the trees a halved match was looking good. A remarkable shot from the Wiltshire player, hooking is approaching through a tiny gap onto the green to 20 feet flattened the Gloucestershire mood and when Steve’s birdie putt missed narrowly Wiltshire secured their third point of the afternoon. When news came that Wiltshire had won the last two matches the final result was an 7-8 loss for the second time this season.

Our thanks go to Lansdown GC for all their support and looking after both the teams so well.
