Seniors narrowly lose to Dorset

The Seniors latest Channel League match saw them welcome Dorset to The Players Golf Club. Dorset had stolen Gloucestershire’s Southern Counties crown the week before and so revenge was sought! Gloucestershire made a late change when James Webber was taken ill and was replaced by Guy Whittern. An extremely close match followed.

In the morning greensomes foursomes Matt Standford and Dave Law played in a fiercely contested match managing to win the last to secure a half. This was followed by the old stagers, Nick Barwood, celebrating his 68th birthday, and Tim Rogers who secured a half, but having been two up with two to play, they were disappointed and their teammates were disappointed for them! Guy Whittern and Mike Burris were down throughout their match but kept up the fight, eventually losing by the narrowest of margins, 1 down. The dream team of Clink and Gravelle continued their excellent season and once again produced a win but when Andy Wright and Ken Madden succumbed to a 2&1 defeat, Gloucestershire were losing 3-2 at lunch.

Needing a strong start Matt Stanford led the team off in the afternoon singles. With his silky skills and playing on his home course, Matt delivered the first win of the afternoon with a comfortable 3&2 victory, maintaining his unbeaten singles record for the season. This was followed by victory for the birthday boy, Nick Barwood, by 5&4 and a comfortable win for Tim Rogers by 4&3. At this stage all was looking good for the County Seniors with three wins out of three. Unfortunately, Dave Law lost a close match 1 down, which goes to show that the first hole is as important as the last! When Mike Burris also lost 3&2 the team scores were back level. Up stepped Nigel Gravelle and Tim Clink for yet another 100% day with Gravelle winning 4&3 and Clink holeing a 40 foot putt on the last green to win 1 up. Advantage Gloucestershire again! Unfortunately, the final three matches involving Guy Whittern, Andy Wright and Ken Madden all went the way of Dorset who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and won the match 8-7. A disappointing result but the Seniors are still very much in the hunt for the Channel League title and hopefully a victory against Cornwall on 7th July will return the train to the tracks. Many thanks to The Players for the fantastic welcome the Team received and for providing us with an excellent course.
