The team arrived in good spirits on a sunny summer’s day over at Worlebury GC to take on Somerset in our first Channel league match of the season and with a strong wind and a very & tight golf course to contend with, it was certainly going to be very testing conditions for the players to battle it out in!
The team was comprised of all U18 squad players who were all very keen to prove themselves in this first fixture and with many of the boys having never played the course before, the morning foursomes provided the opportunity to see the course before the key singles matches in the afternoon.
Captain Phelps and Charlie Jenkins led the way in the morning foursomes and had a really tough match against their opponents eventually losing 1 down on the last but that doesn’t tell the full story! Having won the par 5 15th to go one up, they hit a great tee shot into the middle of the difficult par 3 16th only for Troy Young from Somerset to then hole out for a whole in One to square the match. Congratulations Troy! Our boys then had an opportunity to win the 17th but just missed their putt and unfortunately then lost to a very good par on the 18th in this very closely contested match.
Charlie Ford and Riley Wood always had their noses in front in the 2nd match winning their match on the 17th and Oscar Linton & Edison Butler ran out comfortable winners in the 3rd Match winning 5&4. Tom Chapman & James Sayce had a good start and went up early in their match but they were reigned back in on the back 9 losing this very close match 1 down. So with the scores 2 v 2, it was Ethan Jay & Oscar Horler who secured a narrow 3 v 2 lead going into the afternoon singles with a very good 5&3 win.
So with lunch out of the way it was time to match up again in the afternoon singles and Reggie did his bit by winning the opening singles matches but the 2 point advantage was very quickly wiped out when Oscar Linton lost his match to hole in one man (Troy Young, Worlebury Junior Captain) who was 4 under when the match finished on the 12th , closely followed by Charlie Ford who lost his match on the 17th. So with the scores at 4 v 4 it was all to play for in the remaining 7 singles matches
Edison was well up early in his match and eventually won 2 & 1. Charlie Jenkins had another great contest in the afternoon and this time won on the last. Tom was well down in his game but showed some great resilience to come back and win on the 17th so with 4 games still out on the course, we were in a very strong position to win the match. In all those games we were ahead after 9 holes and Riley, James Oscar Horler and Ethan all came through victorious meaning that we won the afternoon singles 8 v 2 to secure an overall 11 v 4 victory.
An excellent team result and a very good win against a very competitive Somerset side. However, the highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the first ever hole in one for Oscar Horler on the short par 12th. I was lucky enough to be at the green to see it and it was a first class shot with the ball spinning back into the hole. Congratulations Oscar!
Ian Poole was the Somerset manager on the day and our thanks go to him and his Somerset team for playing the game in such a good spirit. Our thanks also go to Worlebury Golf Club for hosting the event, presenting the course in such good condition considering the recent warm spell and keeping us fed & watered throughout the day.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Richard Salter (our GGU President), Mark Powell (our Chairman & Joint GGU U18 Manager) and James Maiden (our Psychologist) for all their support on the day as I know the boys thoroughly enjoy having them there and cheering them on. Finally many thanks to all the parents for bringing the boys to the match and for all those that stayed to provide their support to the boys on the day. Everyone’s support is very much appreciated.
Our next big event is the Junior County Championships at Lilley Brook on Sunday 29th June after which we will be selecting the 8 man team to represent the GGU U18’s in the SW U18 Championships which are being held at Perranporth on Thursday 10th July
