GGU 2nd Team fight back to claim draw with Glamorgan 2nd Team
Gloucestershire 2nd team entertained a strong Glamorgan team at Henbury Golf Club on Sunday 15th June in a friendly match. With the weather set fine and historically close matches between the two counties it was everything to play for with the Henbury golf course in great condition.
The morning foursomes did not go to plan with the first 3 matches all ending in defeat, Finn Ellis and Lee Hanson lost 3&1, Josh Edmunds and Dan Page were next out and fought all the way to the last but ended up losing by 2 holes. In the 3rd match Neil Tocknell and Joel Warne struggled on the greens which was the difference and ended up losing by 4&3 but the comeback started with a last hole victory for Dave Allison and Stu Hardy giving the team a boost going into lunch although still trailing 3-1.
Lee Hanson led off the singles and produced a gritty performance to start the comeback winning 2&1 however the next 2 matches ended in defeat for Josh Edmunds 4&3 and Dave Allison 3&1 leaving a big hill to climb to get a positive result. The middle matches proved to be strong for Gloucestershire with Captain Neil Tocknell holding on for a narrow 1 up victory before commanding wins for Stu Hardy 4&3, Finn Ellis 6&4 and Joel Warne making his debut by a 4&3 margin and despite Dan Page losing 3&2 in the final match the team battled back well to secure a hard fought draw.
Special thanks to Henbury Golf Club members and staff for their welcome and hospitality, the Glamorgan team for great competition and comradery, my sidekick Alan Robinson for his support along with Pat Murphy.
