108th County Amateur Championship - Day 1

On Saturday 18th May sixty of the best golfers from across Gloucestershire took to Broadway GC to do battle over 36 holes on Day 1 of the 108th County Championship. The top 30 and ties would progress to play a further 36 holes on Sunday 19th May. The golf course was presented in pristine condition and the weather was favourable for good scoring. Also being played for on Day 1 was the Winterbotham Cup where the winning club will go on to represent Gloucestershire at the England Golf Champion Club event which is being held at Stanton on the Wolds GC later in the year.

After the morning rounds Matt Bell (Lilley Brook) & Nathan Moore (Long Ashton) lead the way after both carding 66 (-6). Completing the top 3 was Ash Millington (The Players) who was a single stroke back on 67 (-5). The field were all chasing Matt & Nathan going into Round 2.

Nathan Moore added a 70 to his morning round of 66 to give him a 36 hole total of 136 (-8) and an overnight lead of three strokes. Matt Bell added a 73 to his 66 giving him a total of 139. The best score of the day came from home member Kieran Sutton (Broadway) who scored a 65 (-7) to go with his morning round of 74 to leave him also on 139. James Bath (Lydney) and Nick Day were also on 139. The newly crowned Colts Champion, Ed Fry (Minchinhampton) joined the group on 139.

The 36 hole cut of the top 30 and ties fell at 149.

The Winterbotham Trophy was won by the Henbury trio of Mike Day, Calum Mortimore and Nick Day who's 36 hole aggregate total with the best two from three scores of 280 (-8) was good enough to secure victory by a single stroke from The Players Club. We wish the team and the club the very best of luck for the England Golf Champion Club event later in the year.

The 108th County Championship is finely poised ahead of Day 2 and best of luck to those who made the cut.
