On Sunday 18th July, 49 boys took to Ross-on-Wye GC to do battle over 36 holes with the target of being crowned Gloucestershire Golf Union Boys Champion. There were 3 trophies up to grabs which were the Tait Cup (U18 Champion), The Leslie Cox Trophy (U17 Champion) and the Scott-Cooper Cup (U18 Net winner).

After the mornings play Ashley Millington (The Players Club) lead the way with a fine 68 (-4). Ashley’s brother, Josh Millington was sitting in 2nd place after shooting 71 (-1). In third was Charlie Mckinnes (Minchinhampton) who shot a very credible 72 (Level). Defending champion Milan Reed (Long Ashton) fired a 75 to open up with.

The best net score from the mornings play was also Ashley Millington who was -5. In second was Charlie Mckinnes with a net 68 and back in third on 69 was the home player Fred Dineen (Ross-on-Wye). This left it tight in all 3 competitions going into the afternoons play.

Ashley Millington added an afternoon score of 77 to his 68 to give him a 36 hole total of 145 which was the early score to beat. Josh Millington fired a 75 which gave him a total of 146. Alistair Curnock added a 71 (-1) to his mornings score of 75 to give him a total of 147 which wasn’t enough to overtake Ashely and Josh. With 145 the score to beat Charlie Mckinnes needed to shoot 72 to win or 73 to force a playoff with Ashley. Charlie added a 72 to his morning round of 72 which meant he was crowned Gloucestershire Golf Union 2021 Boys Champion. Charlie also picked up the The Leslie Cox Trophy. Charlie will represent Gloucestershire in the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September.

Charlie was also leading the net with a total net score of 136 (-8). Charlie lead the way for a long time but it was in the final group of the day that the winner came. Fred Dineen added an impressive net 65 to his mornings score of 69 to give him a 36 hole total of 134 (-10). Fred was awarded the Scott-Cooper trophy and was crowned GGU Boys Net Champion. Charlie finished in 2nd (-8)  and in third was Ben John (Cotswold Hills).

Thank you to everyone at Ross-on-Wye GC for their hospitality throughout the day and for presenting the golf course in excellent condition.
