Gloucestershire Golf Union

the duchess salver

The Duchess Salver was presented to the County by J.K.R Graveney during his term in office as County Captain in 1972, and is the Gloucestershire Order of Merit for amateur golfers.

For many years it has been the most important indicator to County selectors of a players current form and ability. It is essential that all players who want to achieve County honours ensure that they enter as many of its events as they possibly can.

The event boasts a very fine list of previous winners, many of them former internationals including both Gordon Brand Jnr and Chris Wood who have both gone on to become successful European Tour professionals.

Points and scoring structure

Points are awarded in accordance with the table below to the top 24 players in each of the qualifying events, or anybody tying for 24th place. The final points score for each player is calculated by adding the best six individual points scores from the eight available events.

13th - 12 points
19th - 6 points
2nd - 65 points

Points are only awarded to players who are eligible to represent the County in a team match. If a player who is not eligible to represent the County finishes in the top 24 then those points are simply discarded e.g. if an event is won by a player outside of the County then no player scores the 100 points available for that event.

Prizes are awarded at the end of the season to the players who finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the table. In the event of a tie for one of these places, the higher prize is awarded to the player who scored the highest number of points in any single event. If still tied, then the prize is awarded to the player with the next highest points score in any single event, and so on. If both players have identical records for the season then the prize is shared.

If it is not possible to complete one of the qualifying events, then the prizes will be allocated on a "best 5 from 7" basis. If two events are cancelled, then it will revert to the "best 5 from 6". If three or more events are cancelled then scores in all qualifying events will count towards the final placings.
