GGU U18's play their 1st Channel League Match

The GGU U18 County team played their 1st Channel League match of the season against Somerset in breezy conditions on what can only be described as a cold grey summer’s day at Tracy Park golf course which was a little disappointing given the excellent weather the week before.

The team arrived in good spirits and very much looking forward to doing battle with our close neighbours Somerset. The morning foursomes went well with the GGU boys coming out on top 3 v 2 and there was some excellent golf played by both sides in all the matches. On the back of this slender lead, the boys set out confidently in the afternoon singles but unfortunately things didn’t go to plan and the team quickly found themselves down in all the early matches and never really recovered. There were two good wins for Harvey Taylor and Ted Ballard at the back end of the field and a well earned half by Ash Millington out top who won the last 2 holes to secure his half point but unfortunately all the other boys were unable to turn their games around and the overall match score was 9.5 to 5.5 in Somerset’s favour. The team was a good mix of experience comprising of some established players but also some boys who had never played for the U18s before and it was particularly pleasing to see the two U16 boys (Ted Ballard & Ollie Crowley) stepping up and making a good contribution.

Whilst the matches against Somerset are always competitive, it was great to see that the individual matches were played the in the right spirit the and the GGU team would like to congratulate Ian Poole and all the Somerset boys on their victory. Thanks go to Tracy Park for hosting the event and providing some excellent catering during the day and also to Adam Sutton for captaining the team on the day along with Dereck Butler (County Vice President) & Tom Motley (U18 Coach) for providing their support and encouragement to the boys on the day.

Our next match is away to Wiltshire on the 12th August at North Wilts and any supporters who would like to come along and support the boys will be more than welcome.
