Seniors Channel League win against Somerset at Filton

Gloucestershire Seniors gained significant momentum in their Channel League quest against  Somerset at Filton on 26th May.  After comfortably dispatching Cornwall, captain Nick Morris was hoping for another convincing win and an unchanged team certainly didn’t disappoint.  With several newcomers adding strength to the top end of the order the points, for now are coming thick and fast.  With key away matches on the horizon confidence is understandably high but the determination within the squad will guard against any complacency.

Gloucestershire won the morning session 3 and a half to 1 and a half.  The new pairings of Nick Barwood and Tim Rogers along with Brian Mitten and Tim Clink have taken points against some very strong opposition in the first two matches.  In the afternoon singles Steve Yorke and Nick Barwood took down Somerset’s top two with convincing wins in blustery conditions.  The importance of these two wins was significant with only a half point in the next three games going Gloucestershire’s way.  Despite some precision iron play from Tim Clink, Somerset’s James Ward took the point from a very closely fought encounter.  Clink’s strategically placed iron approach to the par five fifteenth could have been a turning point but Ward holed for a half and remained ahead until the end.  Brian Mitten, despite a potentially serious illness on the day managed to take down his opponent 4/3.  Captain Nick Morris put the first afternoon points on the board with a 7/6 win against George Hampshire and was then upstaged by Vernon Chappell who managed an impressive 8/7 win against a gifted Frank Ward.  A ten and a half to 3 and a half win on the day was well deserved.

Gloucestershire’s seniors travel to Royal North Devon next for the Southern Counties Foursomes qualifier against Devon and Somerset.

A special mention to the venue needs to be made in this report.  The condition of the course at Filton was remarked upon by everyone taking part in the match and the courtesy given to us was excellent.
