GGU U14's play Somerset at Isle of Wedmore

After some great efforts in the GGU U16 champs we brought the weather with us for our first inter county match of the season against Somerset  at Isle of Wedmore

Our morning 9 hole foursomes were led out by U14 Champion Oscar Linton splitting the first fairway for playing partner and captain Ambrose Eaves followed by the effervescent pairing of Charlie Ford and Riley Wood. Giving shots in all four matches ,meant even the powerful pairing of Edison Butler and Ethan Jay had their work cut out while our last group of debutants Oscar Horler and Jack Taylor needed to steady first tee nerves

Despite showing the ongoing wedge world prowess with an almost stone dead approach on 7 from Ambrose shot holes meant they succumbed 2&1 whereas an almost Lee Trevino like constant commentary brought Riley and Charlie in 4&2 winners. Ethan and Edison couldn’t quite get enough advantage from their strength going down on the 8th but our last pairing of Jack and Oscar managed to grind out a half winning their last hole and finish the morning 1.5-2.5 down

After a quick turnaround the boys set out for the afternoon singles with many taking on the corner of the 7th hole to try and force a birdie and all but 2 of the matches had no more than 2 holes in it. Oscar Linton though continued his strong form being 6 up at the turn, soon running out 8&6 winner and evening the match up. For Charlie a couple of slips on the front  9 meant he was up against it but great spirit in keeping going well into the back 9 where the run of Par 5s giving shots just got too much. Equally Ambrose and Riley found it tough but made sure of never giving it away with sensible play but just couldn’t get the putts to drop. Ethan however made use of his distance on the long holes to make another point back. For Oscar a birdie on 9 brought him into the back ahead, while really positive play took Edison and Jack into the turn in good positions as the breeze got up where unfortunately with shots to come only one was able to hold on take a point with us losing the singles 5-3 and the match 7.5-4.5

It has to be said the matches were played in great spirit with the team quickly gelling and mirroring the team support ethic of last years GGU success while the U14s built on their winter work with a smile. Huge thanks to Richard and the Somerset Union for organising the match, Isle of Wedmore GC for providing an ideal venue  and great food. Also a huge thanks to all the parents for not only getting the boys there but providing such great and much appreciated support

With some lessons learnt and achievements to be proud of its onto a busy Jeff Hall half term week and the South West U16 champs before our second major The GGU U18 champs at Bristol and Clifton GC
