Match Report: Gloucestershire U18 Team V Wiltshire - 13th August

The GGU U18 County team arrived bright and early at Chipping Sodbury GC for their match against Wiltshire and looking forward to the battle ahead. Captain Curnock made a couple of adjustments to the morning foursomes pairings and once the teams had been exchanged it was time to get started. Unfortunately it rained in the morning, which was not what we wanted on a mid-August day, and the wet weather seemed to affect the Gloucestershire boys more than the Wiltshire boys as can be seen from the results sheet below!

Alistair Curnock & Dylan Duffy came up against a very strong pairing to lose the first match and then Toby Janes and Adam Sutton managed a half in the next match but unfortunately the next 3 pairings of Edmund Fry & Lewis Stalley, Jamie & Dan Berry and Ethan Holway & Nick Allen all lost their matches so we finished the morning foursomes 0.5 v 4.5 and facing a very tough afternoon if we were to get anything out of the game.

Suitably refreshed after a lunch of sandwiches and chips, the boys were back out to do their best to overturn the disappointment of the morning foursomes. Edmund Fry led the way and was 3 up after 9 before finally succumbing on the 18th green. It was a very tight game between Captain Curnock and his opponent which again went to the last green but unfortunately it was another loss leaving Wiltshire needing only another 1.5 points to win. Lewis Stalley & Jamie Berry then won their individual battles but with both Adam Sutton & Toby Janes both losing their matches it meant that the match was lost. Dylan Duffy was up all the way but unfortunately lost the last to halve his match and it was a similar story for Ethan Holway who was up for most of his game only to lose the last and also his match. However strong performances from Dan Berry and Nick Allen saw them win their matches to make it a very creditable 4.5 v 5.5 result in the afternoon singles

So the overall score was 10 v 5 to Wiltshire and congratulations to them on a fine victory but the boys can be very proud of the way they fought in the afternoon to make the score respectable which was no mean feat given the disappointment of the morning foursomes. It was always going to be an uphill struggle in the afternoon and it was great to see the boys play all their matches in the right spirit – competitive, yet friendly.

I would like to thank Chipping Sodbury for looking after us and making sure we were suitably fed and watered all day and particular thanks go to John Keenaghan and his green staff for presenting the course in such fine condition. A special thanks also to Alistair Curnock who gave the speech after the meal
