Match Report: Gloucestershire U14s V Worcestershire - 27th June 2021

With weather warnings looming and 2 of our players stuck behind an accident on the M5 the early signs for our first competitive outing weren’t great. However, a quick Dr Golf warm up broke the ice and got the boys laughing and ready to play.

With Ambrose and Will stuck on the motorway, we decided to let Ted, in his opening captaincy fixture, lead the boys out where along with Djib they soon got into a 4 up lead. Charlie Jenkins and Riley Wood followed with Charlie Ford and Dylan Hartley making their debuts with the opening holes being tight and well fought.

Meanwhile, after a short delay, our final players made it out with Will Gregory and Oscar Linton taking on the penultimate group while our low challengers Jaxson Perry and Ambrose Eaves took on the Worcs top pairing.

With all our pairings having to give a number of shots, chances had to be taken with Ted and Djib pinned back to 1 Up with 6 to play and Charlie and Riley up against a form pairing ruining a couple of missed chances. Dylan and Charlie also found themselves having to take risks to get on an even footing with a Worcs pairing dovetailing exceptionally well.

First blood went to Worcs with both the Charlie/Riley group and the Dylan/Charlie pairing both losing on the 15th although all their approaches were scrutinised by a very tame deer casually munching away at the back of the tee.

Ted and Djib redressed the balance by increasing their lead again to close out the first point for us before Jaxson and Ambrose built an impressive margin to win on the 15th.

So it all came down to the tight 4th game where after exchanging great putts and nerves on holes 15, 16 and 17 the match was poised all square on 18. After all splitting the fairway and finding the green each of the birdie attempts couldn’t quite find the bottom of the cup so a very sportsmanlike and apt halved result was recorded.

Thanks to Roger, Stuart and all at Worcestershire GU for a great day's golf and to Knowle Golf Club for providing an ideal venue and great food. Also a huge thanks to all the parents for not only getting the boys there but providing such great and much-appreciated support.

With some lessons learned and achievements to be proud of, it's now time for some reflection and planning to build on some great performances into 2021.
