Name and home club

Jake Phillips, Cotswold Hills Golf Club

How did you get into Golf and how long have you been playing?

I got into golf when I was about 6, I used to go down the driving range with a cut down 5 iron. 22 years later, I still have the golf bug, it’s fair to say I’m addicted!

What courses do you enjoy playing in Gloucestershire and why?

I love playing Henbury and Knowle, the greens at both courses are always in fantastic condition

Describe your top three most memorable moments playing in a Gloucestershire county squad

The first time I was picked to play in South West Week was an incredible experience, it just felt like everything had gone up a level, to be able to compete against such good players was a real buzz. Winning the stroke play in 2018 at South West Week was amazing, all the boys were buzzing and soaking the captain with champagne was a moment I’ll never forget! Then playing in county finals, it was amazing to be part of such a class team, and although we were unbeaten, we finished in second place on points difference.

What do you look forward to the most in a season?

Competing, I am such a competitive person, I love it when the pressures on!

How have you been keeping busy during 'Lockdown'?

I’ve been working from home, and have gotten into running to make sure I don’t put too much weight on!

What are your golfing aspirations for the future?

To win the Duchess Salver Order of Merit, to get down to +4 handicap, and to be a part of the Gloucestershire team when we win EGU Finals!

What one piece of advice can you offer golfers who have aspirations to play in a county team?

Practice your short game and putting more than anything else, this is where it matters!

How has the Gloucestershire Golf Union supported you to develop your game?

The GGU has been and still is a fantastic help to me, through funding, friends, and competition golf. More so than A lot of other counties, we are very fortunate to have so many opportunities within Gloucestershire, to help us with our golf
