Young Golfer raises over £5,000 for charity

Lewis Stalley at the
2020 Junior Golf Conference

A junior golfer at Brickhampton Court Golf Club in Gloucester has raised £5,443 for Cancer Research UK in just 12 months.

Lewis Stalley (15) held a variety of fundraising events during his time as Junior Captain at the club in the 2019 season, which included a Rickie Fowler inspired Captains Day held on 13th July 2019.

Lewis recalls: “I wanted to raise money while having fun, and because my favourite golfer is Rickie Fowler, I obviously picked an Orange theme for my captains day competition!”

“We had special orange flags and asked everyone to dress in orange too. 150 people signed up and took part on the day. We also had an auction, a raffle and a beat the pro competition with my Coach Ross Langdon who supported me throughout the year and raised £2,000.”

Each year a new junior captain is selected and in turn, they nominate a new charity to support that season. Lewis chose Cancer Research UK because of the impact the illness has had on his family.  Lewis says: “I also wanted to do this for my parents. They help me a lot. My grandad passed away when my dad was 16 and my Mum’s granddad also passed away due to cancer, so I know it has affected my family. My original target was £1,000. To raise over £5,000 was incredible.”

Lewis’s efforts became even more poignant and determined when Brickhampton Court’s previous handicap secretary and ex Club Captain sadly passed away in July last year due to the illness. He was well loved at the club and gave Lewis his first handicap.

Lewis finished the captain’s year at the beginning of February and Ryan Carter has been named as the club’s Junior Captain for 2020.
