The Knowle Gold Medal

Joe Harvey

The strongest field of the Duchess Salver season assembled and amongst the favourites, playing off handicaps of +4, were defending champion, Nick Day (Henbury), Tillman Trophy Winner, Joe Harvey and Berkshire Trophy Winner, Haider Hussain (Kendleshire).

It has been a difficult week for the green staff, striving for their usual excellent standard of tournament presentation, against a backdrop of very heavy rain most days before the event. However they coped admirably and although a breezy day, the set up was ideal for good scoring.

So it proved with Harrison Otley-Woood (Cotswold Hills) surging into the lead with a four under par round of 66. He was closely followed by Nick Day and brother Mike on 67, with their Henbury Club mate Jonny Daniel on 68. The other player to beat par was Joe Harvey who was still in contention after scoring 69.

In afternoon, Mike Day and Jonny Daniel quickly fell out of contention and Harrison couldn't quite match the brilliance of the morning round.

It was therefore left to Joe Harvey and Nick Day playing together in the last group. With a one shot lead, It looked almost certain that Nick would win yet another Gold Medal, but an uncharacteristic bogey six on his 36th hole left a chance for Joe, who duly capitalised with a birdie and a round of 67 for a winning total of 136.

Dan Sheehan (knowle) came third with a steady total of 140. Dan also won the inaugural Rodney Tugwell Trophy, awarded to the best placed Knowle finisher.

Congratulations to Joe and thank you to the many volunteers who make the event one of the best in the region. Thanks also to Ryan Coles (Knowle Club Manager) for such an excellent report).
