Severnside 4 Counties Jnr Match Play Event
The 38th event was again held at Ross-on-Wye Golf Club on the 20th/21st August 2009 between Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Glamorgan and Gwent.
The course was beautifully prepared and as one of the Worcestershire players, who had joined the green staff of his local club, commented even the bunker surrounds had been properly cut and edged.
Due to Gloucestershire competing in the English County Finals (the same for Worcestershire) it gave us an opportunity to try out a few new faces who will hopefully be in the squad over the next few years. Recognising this hopes were not that high but in the end the team played remarkably well and worked as a team to surpass all expectations.
On Thursday morning there were heavy showers which by the afternoon had cleared away to give a fine afternoon. In the first match Gloucestershire beat Glamorgan 4-3 in a tight match with several games going to the last hole. In the second match Gwent inflicted a heavy defeat on Worcestershire six and a half to a half.
On Friday we again had showers in the morning. Gloucestershire played Gwent in the morning and lost 4-3 again with many games going to the 18th hole. In the afternoon Gloucestershire played Worcestershire winning by 5 games to 3 in several close matches. Josh Harris was the most successful player for Gloucestershire with two wins and a half. All his matches went to the last.
Gwent beat Glamorgan in the afternoon to win the tournament with Gloucestershire finishing a very creditable 2nd.
Ross-on-Wye made us most welcome and provided a course in excellent condition which was supplemented by a friendly club house and good food.
