MALCOLM LEWIS IS PARTNERSHIP’S NEW CHAIRMAN

Malcolm Lewis, from Henbury Golf Club, has been appointed chairman of the Gloucestershire County Golf Partnership.

In making this announcement, acting chairman Mark Powell said:

”Malcolm has a fantastic background in golf, including being a past England captain, Walker Cup player, winner of the British Open Silver Medal (for the leading amateur), British Youth’s champion, as well as a 1st team county player for over 27 years.

Malcolm currently works in the corporate sector delivering board and senior management team coaching and development.

I am confident that Malcolm will bring a new dimension to the role of chairman and will ably support Debbie Casling, County Development Officer and the current partnership committee.”

Powell, who has been acting chairman since the death last year of the Partnership’s first chairman, Don Harmer, will act as Deputy Chairman and represent the men’s union on the partnership Committee.

Lewis thought long and hard before accepting the appointment and is now looking forward to this new challenge:

" I am thrilled to be back engaged with golf and especially in a role where I can help to make a difference in Gloucestershire. These days business life dominates my passions and is all linked to helping individuals and organisations to understand their purpose in life and aligning the action. Hopefully by connecting up my past golfing passions with my vocational work I can help to continue to guide the fantastic work of the Gloucestershire Golf Partnership to date. It has been really exciting to observe the sheer hard work and enthusiasm of all involved led by Mark Powell and the County Development Officer, Debbie Casling."

English Champion of Champions - Woodhall Spa 20-21 September 2009

LAST GREEN BIRDIE EARNS LLOYD CHAMPIONS CROWN

Chris Lloyd won his fifth title of the year when he came out on top in the English County Champions Tournament over the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa (picture © Tom Ward).

A birdie-four on the 18th in a closing 71 for 140 earned the Gloucestershire Champion a one shot winning margin over Matthew Southgate from Essex with former champions Justin Phelps from Middlesex third on 142.

“I’m relieved to have won,” said Lloyd. “I made it hard for myself because I should have had it won this morning when I got to three under through six holes. But I gave it away and had to fight back again. I didn’t play so well this afternoon and didn’t really score until the last six holes. But I said to myself if I could make three birdies I might have a chance.

“The key was the par-five 14th where I hit my second to ten feet and made birdie. Then I also birdied the 16th to get to five under and the one at the last sealed it.”

Lloyd, who was also a member of the winning Boys Home Internationals and Jacques Leglise teams, might have seen even more success but he lost a marathon playoff to Tom Lewis for the Carris Trophy. It’s been a busy year for the young Bristolian from The Kendleshire and he admitted he is looking forward to a rest.  “It’s been a good year for me and this is a good way to end it,” he added. “My season is almost done and I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks off before I get back into the gym.”

English County Boys Finals

This past week Gloucestershire County Juniors have been competing in the EGU Boys County Finals at Whittington Heath against Worcestershire, Lancashire and Surrey for the national title.

Hopes were high recognising the strength of our squad and that we were the only county present with two current internationals.
The team prepared well and made the most of the practice opportunities.

Day one - Gloucestershire v Worcestershire - Win 6-3
Day one dawned with us facing Worcestershire in the second match on the course.  The boys started brilliantly by romping to a 3-0 foursomes win in the morning, with all three pairings looking solid. The afternoon started well with Chris Lloyd taking total control over his game coming away with a 6&5 win.  Sam Sullivan then fought well against Welsh International Chris Nugent but was eventually beaten 2&1. Adam Carson had a real fight having to hole a miss able putt on the last to win 1up, which meant we had won the match but the boys were keen to get as many points on the board as possible.
Sam Payne (our normal "steady eddie") played well but was beaten 2&1.  Tyler Hogarty had an excellent battle, at one stage firing four birdies in a row (only winning one of those holes!) to eventually go down by 2 holes.  This left Laurie Potter to dig deep and eventually win 1up to give us a match score of 6-3.
In the other game Surrey also beat Lancashire 6-3.

Day two - Gloucestershire v Lancashire - Win 5.5-3.5
Day two dawned in brilliant sunshine with Gloucestershire determined to beat Lancashire.  Laurie Potter and Chris Lloyd won the opening foursomes after Chris nearly chipped in on the 18th green (the ball hitting the flag but not dropping).  In the next game (Adam Carson and Sam Sullivan) were beaten heavily - 5&4, with the last game (Sam Payne & Sam Morgan) coming to the 18th but eventually loosing 2 down.  The talk at lunch was that the match was still possible if we started well and that certainly happened.
Chris Lloyd hit a Lob Wedge second shot through the back of the par 5 first hole ! He still won the hole but then dropped 3 shots in the next three to go 2 down but then stepped on the gas to win 4&3.  In the next game, Sam Sullivan competed an excellent half against England International Jack Brooks.  Adam Carson showed his class by winning convincingly 5&3.  Tyler Hogarty and Sam Morgan overcame earlier nerves to win their matches on the 18th hole, which meant that we would go into the last day 1/2 point ahead of Surrey.  Laurie Potter was the only loss in the afternoon 3&2.
In the other game Surrey beat Worcestershire 5-4, after losing the morning foursomes 2-1.

Day three - Gloucestershire v Surrey- Loose 5.5-3.5
Day three dawned with excitement levels at an all time high, knowing that the title was between us and Surrey.  We had halved our singles with Surrey the last time we had met back in June without Chris Lloyd and Adam Carson, so we knew it would be tough but it was possible.  We were exactly were we had wanted to be.
The three foursomes matches were very had fought but first Chris Lloyd and Laurie Potter were unable to keep in touch in their game and lost 3&2 and then Surrey managed to turn around game two which looked like being a win for Gloucestershire to a Surrey win 2&1.  This then left Adam Carson and Sam Sullivan to win on the 18th 1up to give us a fighting chance in the afternoon.
At lunch the boys were reminded that on the previous day the morning foursomes winners in both matches went on to win, so the title was still up for grabs.
In the first game Laurie Potter was 4 down early on but managed to dig deep and fight back to only 1 down after 12 but eventually lost 3&2.  Chris Lloyd proved yet again that he was the man to beat by taking total control of his game to win 5&4 against previous England u16 international Greg Payne.  Sam Payne then struggled in his match loosing convincingly by 6&5.
This then left the title down to the last three games with us needing 21/2 points to take the title.  All three games kept swinging back and forth - first we were losing then we were winning, with nerves on edge.  Tyler stuck to his game and won well on the 18th 1up.  Adam Carson was 2 down then fought back to level only to go dormy 2 down, then won the last two holes to get the half point.  Sam Sullivan fought admirably against England International Josh White, at one stage 4 down to get to 1 down with two to go but eventually succumbing by 2holes.

This meant that Surrey were champions for the third time in a row but Gloucestershire proved without doubt that they can take on anybody and compete at the highest level.  We can all be extremely proud of what this Gloucestershire Junior Team have achieved.  They really worked as a team with every player giving 100% and contributing to the team effort.  All the boys learnt a lot, not least what pressure really is all about.  They can all hold their heads high knowing how good they are and how they gave it their best shot.  It was so close but wasn't to be in the end.  We will be back next year.
