Gloucestershire v Worcestershire (1st Team Report)
Wonderful result for the new look Gloucestershire County First Team. Mixing a blend of youth and experience this was the first match played under the direction of new County Captain Mike Darby (pictured right) and the recently restructured management Team.
The foursomes were nearly a white wash with five matches going in favour of the Gloucestershire Team, only the two local Stinchcombe players failed to edge out a victory.
Lunch tasted fantastic on a beautiful day at Stinchcombe however the Captain felt the need to reiterate to the team the need for complete concentration in the singles and close out the match as quickly as possible, remembering two years ago being 5 - 0 up at lunch against Glamorgan at Chipping Sodbury and losing the match!
Local man Tom Workman led from the front gaining GGU their first point of the afternoon against a very strong Worcs player Chris Bromley
The next two games went in favour of Worcestershire until another Stinchcombe player Mark Pitcher proved to strong against the Worcs captain Graham Wallace with an emphatic 5 and 4 victory
Nick Day came up against a putting machine from Holland and lost 5&3 - were Worcestershire going to turn this match around?
No chance as the tail end of the Glos team proved way to strong with the highlight results being Oscar Sharpe winning 7&6 and Sam Sullivan 6&4.
Bradley Selwood from Knowle made his First team debut and acquitted himself superbly with a win in the foursomes and a half in the singles
In conclusion Mike Darby said....' What a way to start the season I couldn't have asked for a finer performance from the new look Gloucestershire team. We play Devon in the Channel League next week at Bristol and Clifton and its certain to be a tough battle.
I believe we are in a transitional period where we are rebuilding the teams with players totally committed to representing their County with pride - the future looks bright - let's hope we can maintain this fantastic start!'
The County would like to thank all the staff at Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club for making us most welcome and the members for allowing us use of the course.
Any questions
