Match Summary
Gloucestershire made a fine recovery in the afternoon singles in their first match of the season to beat Worcestershire 10.5 – 7.5 at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club. In the morning foursomes played in fine sunshine but with a chilly breeze blowing across the golf course it was Worcestershire who got off to a great start winning the 1st two matches. The 3rd match was a close affair with Chris Evans & Andy Hale holing a fantastic long putt on the 17th to go 1up on Anthony Hill & Chris Bromley! With the final hole being halved our first points were on the board. With matches 5 & 6 going to Worcestershire it was down to the new young talent of Laurie Potter & Tyler Hogarty to give Gloucestershire a much needed point! Things were looking good with Gloucestershire being 4up but a great fight back from the Worcestershire pair resulted in a halved match.
With a mountain to climb Gloucestershire produced a fantastic come back in the singles. Match 1 saw Nick Day leading the way yet again to produce the perfect start winning 3/1 over Dave Marshall. In match 2 Mat Stanford played his usual great golf to win 3/2 as did Dave Wood in match 3! This was a perfect start and it carried on down the order. There were also good wins for Ollie Glaze Shane Winstone , Nigel Thompson , Neil Dean , Mark Pitcher & finally Laurie Potter who brought home another fine win with a 3/2 victory over Captain Rod Armstrong giving Gloucestershire a 9-3 victory in the singles to win the match 10.5 – 7.5.
“ A fantastic effort from my players”. County captain Nigel Thompson was full of praise for his team saying “ After a poor start in the foursomes this just shows that everybody has grit and determination and they did not want to get beaten! This result is crucial as it will give us great confidence going into our 1st Channel league match against Devon at Saunton next Sunday!
Next week is our most important game and with Devon winning their 1st match of the season against Cornwall they are chomping at the bit to play us and beat us! But I know if we play to our potential we can beat anyone!”.
