Match Report Glos v Wilts June 20th Broome Manor GC
Gloucestershire maintained their 100% record in the channel league with a comprehensive 11.5 – 3.5 victory over Wiltshire at Broome Manor on Sunday June 20th. With perfect conditions and hot weather the course was set up for low scoring golf! And it showed in the foursomes. Match 1! The strong partnership of Nick Day & Ollie Glaze once again delivered a fine start with a 3/2 win. Dave Wood & Andy Rudge also played great golf in match 2 to win 2/1. This was followed with County Captain Nigel Thompson playing with England boy international Chris Lloyd (who was making his 1st team debut in the channel league!). With Lloyd showing his class and Thompson playing some steady golf the Gloucestershire pair ran out 3/2 winners.
Match 4 was a bad morning in the office for Andy Hale & Mark Pitcher losing 6/5! But both made up for that in the afternoon.
Match 5 was played in a high class of golf with birdies flying everywhere! But it was the Gloucestershire pair of Dave Lake & Paul Ryder winning 2/1 over home player and Wiltshire Captain Kevin Phillips & Sam Elkins.
A great start in the foursomes leading 4-1 and then Gloucestershire once again played great golf in the singles!
With Gloucestershire needing only 4 points for victory it was not long for that to happen!
County Captain Nigel put his strong players out top and they all produced great wins.
Chris Lloyd led the way with a 5/4 win followed by Nick Day winning 3/2 in match 2. Andy Rudge played superb golf to win 4/3 and with only needing 1 more point it was Ollie Glaze in match 4 winning 2/1 to seal victory for Gloucestershire.
With 5 more matches on the course it was looking like a big win for Gloucestershire! Match 5 was a close affair with Dave Wood getting a Half with home member Paul Sandry. And that was followed with Wiltshire’s 1st win in the singles with Mark Snape winning 2/1 over Captain Nigel Thompson.
Andy Hale & Mark Pitcher got their points on the board with good wins in their singles and that was followed with Dave Lake narrowly losing 1down to Jason Hempleman (who is Colin Montgomerie’s caddie). And with Paul Ryder playing great golf he beat once again Kevin Phillips on the last to give Gloucestershire a 7.5 -2.5 win in the singles and a 11.5 – 3.5 victory.
County captain Nigel Thompson was full of praise saying “ After our near miss's at South West Week this was the ideal response from my players! I know Wiltshire did not have their strongest team out but you have still got to be 100% focused and play to the best of your ability! And that is what happened with all my players! I am very pleased & proud of them all.
This is my final year as captain and the channel league is in our own hands and I would love to finish my year with the league and I know the players are giving it 100% and they are desperate to win it this year as we were so close last season”
The next game is against Somerset at Filton GC on August 1st
