A crushing defeat which virtually secures the Channel league title for the arch enemy Somerset.
GGU got off to the worst possible start losing the first four foursomes matches with a big loss for Nick Day and Andy Hale against the Somerset Captain and the new teenage sensation Jamie Clare (Runner Up in the English Amateur the week before). The Stinchcombe pairing of Workman and Pitcher secured the first point in the bottom match but this left the afternoon session needed everyone to perform.
Mendip was presented in excellent condition with the greens in superb shape – what could the team do? By the time the first match had reached the 13th Tee every match was either level or up with only three exceptions. We then experienced the worst rain, thunder and lighting storm we’ve ever seen. The players were called off the course with rivers running down the 9th and 18th fairways. The greens and bunkers were flooded within minutes. What next? If the afternoon session could not be finished then under Channel League rules the singles would be halved and the match decided on the mornings result. We were not prepared to concede victory so we waited for approximately two hours before the players could venture back out on the course. In fairness to Mendip the course drained unbelievably well and so quickly but the delay affected our players more than the Somerset team.
Tom Workman lost in the top match, Nick Day birdied the last two holes to beat the ex GGU player Shane Winstone 1Up, Hale lost on the 18th and so did Dave Wood, things were not looking great. Rudge beat the Somerset Captain on the 17th and David Lake had a convincing 4&3 victory – Game On?
Regretably the tail end lost all their matches in the end giving Somerset a well deserved and convincing victory.
At South West Week we were brilliant in the foursomes, in the two Channel league games since we’ve gone into lunch 4-1 down each time. Changes will have to be made for the Glamorgan game at Chipping Sodbury on August 28th.
