Match Report Gloucestershire v Glamorgan
Gloucestershire had got of to a fantastic start in their channel league match against fellow title contenders Glamorgan at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club on Sunday. In the morning foursomes in windy conditions on new competition tees at a fantastic condition golf course Gloucestershire got of to flying start with all five matches winning to race into a 5-0 lead which was unthinkable with Glamorgan a very strong outfit.
With just three points needed for victory it was just a matter of when the victory would come! But you must never write off a wounded animal! In match one home member Dave Wood had a very close match with Glamorgan captain Richard Hooper but a bogey 6 on the last gave Glamorgan a close win. Match two saw Andy Rudge Play superb golf and win 2/1. With just 2 points needed Glamorgan produced a great fight back to win matches 3,4,5&6 to bring them right back into contention. Match 7 saw Rich Carter play solid golf and gave Gloucestershire a 4/3 win! Just one more point needed for victory. In the final three games Glamorgan had the upper hand going into the final stages and with Nick Day & captain Nigel Thompson both losing 2/1 it was down to Andy Hale in the final match to secure the points. But with Andy Hale being 2down with 2 to play the best we could hope for was a halve match if he wins the next 2 holes! Andy made a solid par on 17 to go 1down and then on 18 he gave himself a good chance of a birdie with his opponent having a 5 footer for a par. With Andy having a 10footer for a halve match his putt just fell wide of the cup leaving Glamorgan a 5 foot putt for victory! Which they holed for a unthinkable victory after being 5-0 down in the morning.
A shell-shocked captain Nigel Thompson said “ I’m speechless! That result has never happened to me or any team I have played in. It was just one of those afternoons where nothing went our way! I must give credit to Glamorgan they played and putted superbly in the afternoon.”
Thompson still paid tribute to his team saying “The boys are down after this result but make no mistake they will come out fighting against Cornwall in two weeks time. So far it has been a fantastic season and they should be proud of themselves of what they have achieved so far. The league is still there to win and we will give 100% in the final two matches”.
The next match is against Cornwall at Perranporth on the 13th September.
