Captains Match Report
What a great performance to start the 2011 Channel League campaign. Gloucestershire beat Devon 9.5 - 5.5 on the most beautiful sunny day at Bristol and Clifton
The morning foursomes were won by Devon 3 points to two. Nick Day and Andy Hale came out of the blocks really fast in the top game, 6 under par through 9 holes against the experienced pairing of Max Burrow and James Dimond. Devon then hit back winning the next two matches
The Stinchcombe pairing of Tom Workman and Mark Pitcher picked up the second point for Gloucestershire. The strongest Devon pairing of Damien Gee and David Blick were in no mood to let the young Gloucestershire pairing of Hogarty and Sullivan spoil their morning. So we went in to lunch with Devon holding poll position.
Captain Mike Darby decided to give Bradley Selwood from Knowle his Channel league debut and putt him out top of the order against the vastly experienced James Dimond. The big hitting Knowle golfer did not disappoint, making birdie on the first he led all the way to give Gloucestershire their first afternoon point with a 3&2 win - a brilliant performance and an inspired decision. The next two matches went Gloucestershire's way with the talented Andy Hale fighting back from 2 down after nine to win 3&2 and the Mr Reliable from Henbury Nick Day was just to strong against the Devon Vice Captain.
Match four went Devon's way, but no shame in the performance as Sam Sullivan was two under par gross in defeat by the Devon player.
You could sense that the Devon Captain Neil Holland was not enjoying the afternoon sun as Tyler Hogarty crushed Jimmy Mullen and Andy Rudge birdied the last to give Gloucestershire the next two games
The match now stood at 7 - 4 in Gloucestershire's favour - could Devon win the next four matches? David Lake fought back brilliantly but lost 2 and 1 against the birdie machine Mr Blick who had been five up after eight holes. The Stinchcombe boys didn't disappoint with two magnificent wins in matches 8 and 9 for Gloucestershire - the game was won! But there was still one match on the course!
David Wood versus Damien Gee( Class and experience in the clutch position) Wood birdied the 18th for a half and what a fantastic way to round off a memorable day for the new look Gloucestershire side. Captain Mike Darby said ' A real team performance with great attitude and commitment from every one of our players. We are looking for passion when wearing the Gloucestershire shirt and I'm thrilled to say that every single Gloucestershire player gave 110% to their County and their Team mates. Brilliant result!'
I'd like to thank James and all his staff at Bristol and Clifton for their hospitality and the many Gloucestershire supporters that watched the game, the players really appreciated it.
