What a weekend!
If you imagine playing golf on the moon in a hurricane that just about depicts the scene. The amazing thing was the incredible standard of golf displayed by both sides but especially by the Cornish players.
We were never at the races in the bottom three foursomes parings. David Lake and Sam Morgan were hit by a barrage of birdies over the first nine holes, Andy Rudge and Reece Johnson were 7 down through 9 holes with the Cornish lads 6 under par through seven holes! ( If you were there, you would say that kind of scoring was impossible in that weather – well it happened). David Wood and Andy Hale won the last hole in the top match to snatch a half and Tyler and Charlie were level par when beaten 2&1. Gloucestershire 4 ½ to ½ point down at lunch with a mountain to climb.
Tyler went off top in the singles and played superb golf against Welsh International Ben Westgate. The result went to Doctor Westgate 2&1 with Tyler 2 under par in defeat. Next up David Wood who couldn’t continue his winning ways against local young player Conor Wilson. Match 3 Haler birdies the last, is this our first point? Cornwall birdie as well, game halved.
Rudgy fought hard but was never up against the birdie machine Anthony Nash. David Lake did give us hope being 1 up through 7, Cornwall then eagle the eigth whilst Dave birdies and the game changes, David eventually going down by 2 holes.
Now the youngsters at the tail end could they overcome the elements and the Cornish attack?
Sam Morgan was up to the challenge a comfortable winner by 3&2. Charlie Mclean was always in control of his game winning 4&2 – great results and well done.
Jake Phillips was well beaten by a 4 under par performance from the experienced Steve Chapman who obviously liked the gale force conditions playing out of St Enedoc.
Young Reece Johnson looked like picking up a half until the Cornish lad birdied the 17th and he loses 1 down and Mark Pitcher in the anchor position was never up in the bottom game against the formidable Joe Cruise.
On paper this defeat looks like a disaster, in realty the Gloucestershire players ALL played really well in the most savage golfing conditions I’ve ever seen. Cornwall on the day were just UNBELIEVABLE! We took an incredibly young side to this fixture and we are giving our youngsters the opportunity to develop against the best players in the South West. I’m confident that with time we will produce a new look Gloucestershire winning team. Stick with us
