To complete a busy week the Gloucestershire County Seniors Championships took place on Wed 19th August at the very beautiful Naunton Downs Golf Course. The weather was very warm with a tricky 20mph breeze to make the firm & fast greens very difficult to hold or putt on.
Mike Everitt of Broadway was first out & mastered the course from the onset. With a total of just 23 putts in his round he set the target of 77 which would prove to be unassailable to all.
Sean Lynch, (Minchinhampton) the current holder of the trophy made a brave defence with a score of 78 & Mike Bray of Brickhampton Court came in with a 79 to win the nett Durnford Trophy (79-08-71). No-one else could break 80 in the difficult conditions.
Age category winners were:
55-59 Alan Dangerfield (Minchinhampton) 82
60-64 Mike Rhodes (Shirehampton Park) 81
65 -69 Les Carter (Broadway) 82 on countback
70+ John Woolley (Minchinhampton) 83
The winners of the Macallan Cup (team event) were Broadway with Mike Everitt, Les Carter & Paul Wragby whose best two from 3 nett scores were 70/77 = 147.
Altogether a very fine tournament played on a great golf course with terrific camaraderie & sportsmanship with a very competitive outlook. These senior golfers are all truly young at heart & very fit- an example to all.
