A very poor day for Gloucestershire they were out classed by a far better team who inflicted on Gloucestershire one of the heaviest defeats I can remember.
Our team played well but were no match for the Gwent team in any department of the game which the result shows. The highlight of the morning foursomes was Luke Derrick and Jon Thayer gaining a half in a game where neither pair gained the upper hand. In the afternoon singles there were good wins for Luke Derrick, Harry Owen and Matthew Hind.
It is a credit to the Gwent Union, which only has half the clubs compared to Gloucestershire, that they can turn out such a strong team, most of whom will still be available for the under 16 team next year.
Having spoken to their organiser Chris King he said he was short of three players and had reserves playing in their place else the team would have been even stronger. (Heaven knows what the result would have been then). He went on to say that they have a very structured coaching strategy for all their potential county junior players starting with the U14 squads.
