Comment
The Long Ashton Course was in excellent condition for the tournament but most found it very difficult to score. With the
exception of Geoff Clay (Minchinhampton) most of the favourites to win did not play very well in the first round. David Potter of
Naunton Downs on his first attempt in this event, finished well in the first round with two birdies at 16 & 18 to take the halfway
lead. Richard Boulding (Henbury) just back after leg surgery was in second place with a 77 & local man Paul Isaacs of the home
club in third with a 78 alongside Clay & Ian Melvin of Cotswold Hills. It got distinctly colder for the second round, which made
for difficult conditions on the firm & fast greens. Robert Broad showed his international class with a well constructed roun of 74
and David Potter followed his great morning round with a solid 77 to finish 2nd & Ian Melvin worked very hard to return a
75 to take third place but with a magnificent one under par 70, Richard Boulding blew the field away to secure his first County
major title. He said, 'I am astonished, since my leg operation, I have played really badly so this is a big surprise to me. I must
congratulate Long Ashton for producing such a fabulous course after a difficult winter, they should be very proud'
