The 7th Annual County AM/AM took place at the fabulous Minchinhampton Avening course on Friday 7th May. The weather was very cold for this time of year with a cold north easterly wind - not good for May! Never mind there was a good spirit with everyone playing. Each of the twenty teams of three were joined by a county squad player to play a bowmaker format of two scores to count. The county player in each team was also playing a gross medal round against his fellow squad members. With the County Captain Nigel Thompson also playing, this made it a real test for the elite players who are keen to impress him with South West Week coming up in early June.
This event is put on by the elite players to help raise funds for their practice weekend away at the South West Week venue & has become extremely popular with the teams.
In the elite players scratch competition a terrific 67 by Mark Pitcher Of Stinchcombe Hill won the 1st prize. He beat Shane Winstone of The Kendleshire who returned a 69 (with 2 penalty strokes) who took 2nd place on countback from Jason Cuff of Knowle.
In the team event the two Filton teams took the honours with Trevor Atkinson, Roy Oaten & Geoff Endicott partnered by Jason Cuff winning the trophy & taking 1st prize with a fabulous score of 124 (16 under par) with Bernie Powell, Peter Bowe & Reg Cox & their elite player Chris Evans (Kendleshire) taking 2nd place with a 15 under par score of 125. In 3rd place was the team from Tewkesbury Park of Mel Hadfield, Russ McNamara & Alex Wiggins with their elite player, Tyler Hogarty (Rodway Hill), with a score of 126 (14 under par).
All the players were treated to a fine meal after the event & County Captain, Nigel Thompson thanked all the entrants for coming & supporting his squad. He said, 'I hope you will all be rewarded by seeing the Gloucestershire team qualifying for the English County Finals & winning the Channel League'
Everyone had a great day at a great venue with much humour & camaraderie.
