Coaching Squad - Mark Sanders

Players in Mark Sanders' squad will typically meet the following criteria:-

  • Must have demonstrated a previous commitment to representing the County (if selected)
  • Must have demonstrated a previous commitment to playing in events that are included within the County Stroke Average Table
  • Must be of an age where it is thought that County Organised Coaching would be beneficial - most likely to be between 14 and 17 years of age


Any player wishing to be a part of this squad must be fully committed to both Gloucestershire as a team, and to their own improvement programme.

The Squad Manager & Squad Performance Coach

Squad Manager

The Squad Manager is Rodney Tugwell of Knowle Golf Club. Rodney is a former South West Counties Men's Amateur Champion, and played for the Gloucestershire County 1st Team during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

He was County Captain during 2001 and 2002, winning the South West Match Play Shield on bot occasions. He also lead the team to the English County Finals at Burnham & Berrow in 2001.

His experience from both a playing and managerial perspective make him the perfect appointment for this role.

Squad Performance Coach

Mark is a teaching professional at Stockwood Vale Golf Club and has a huge amount of experience of what it takes to become a player at the very highest level. He took up the game fairly late in comparison with most players but was playing for the County Mens team whilst still a Junior. He went on to represent the South West and then England following his fantastic win in the English Amateur Championship at Woodhall Spa in 1998. Mark was a member of the Walker Cup Squad in 1999 alongside the likes of Luke Donald, Paul Casey and Simon Dyson.

Mark turned professional in 2000. In 2001 he played in the Open Championship at the Royal Lytham St Annes, played on the Europro Tour in 2001, finishing 3rd on the Order of Merit and played on the European Challenge Tour in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and qualified for the European PGA Tour in 2005. Mark has played alongside and against the top players of the world – the likes of Woods and Garcia to name but a few.
