The venue for this years County Seniors Open’s Final was the magnificent links of Minchinhampton’s Avening Course attended by 70 finalists who had all qualified by winning one of the handicap categories at their club’s or County  Senior Open day.

Altogether 3600 players entered to reach the final. The club opens & finals are sponsored by the Consultant Eye Surgeons Partnership (CESP), the Group are local to both Cheltenham & Bristol. Senior Partner John Ferris from the Cheltenham Branch & a member of Cotswold Hills attended the day to meet the players & present the wonderful prizes given by the Partnership.

The main prize for the overall winner was a long weekend for two at the prestigious Carlyon Bay Hotel & Golf Club in Cornwall.

The day itself was very bright but windy and several players struggled to master the conditions, nevertheless one or two came in with terrific scores.

The overall winner was Roger Willett from Filton with a magnificent 39 points, playing off a handicap of 22, he said, ‘I can’t quite believe that I have won such a prestigious tournament in my club’s Centenary year, this is a moment I will never forget, my wife & I will look forward to the weekend away next spring’ Roger also won the coveted trophy & a crystal sideboard bowl for winning his ¾ higher handicap category.

Just missing out was Minchinhampton Old’s great campaigner, Alan Dangerfield, playing off a 5 handicap he equaled the winning score of 39 points but lost out on a back 9 countback. His great effort won the low handicap (Cat 1/2) trophy.

In second place in the low handicap trophy was Sean Lynch, of Minchinhampton, playing off 5, he returned 38 points & in second place in the higher handicap category was Joe Rosselli also of Minchinhampton, playing off a 20 handicap who returned 33 points.

The evergreen Morris Little of Cotswold Hills who is 80 next year won the longest drive & Mike Rhodes pf Shirehampton Park won the nearest the pin shot.

Altogether a wonderful day for the county grass roots seniors who were able to show that golf is a sport for all age groups.
