Gloucestershire Golf Union Centenary Dinner

Gloucestershire golf union held their Centenary dinner at Cheltenham Racecourse on Thursday 23^rd March 2006. It was attended by around 350 members from 35 of its 43 affiliated clubs.

In attendance were the GGU Centenary President, Paul Fisher, the English Golf Union President Donald Steel and Peter McEvoy OBE who all made excellent speeches.

The celebrations are the start of Gloucestershire’s Centenary year. They have produced a centenary yearbook, a commemorative plate & special trophies for all winners of championships during the year. There will be special centenary matches between Worcestershire & Warwickshire to celebrate 100 years of golf between the 3 Counties.

Peter McEvoy talked about his wonderful experiences as an amateur golfer and of course his wins as Captain of the Walker Cup Team.

Silver plates commemorating the event were presented to The Gloucestershire Golf Union by the R & A & also by the English Golf Union. The GGU is only the eighth county union to reach its centenary.

All the affiliated clubs received a unique plate with their club name & county identity number embossed on it.

Each member at the dinner was given a gold pin badge to show they had attended the great event.

Ian Watkins, the County Secretary said, ‘The Centenary dinner lived up to all its expectations, it was full to capacity & everyone there knows it was a very special evening.’
