Match Review
The morning foursomes was a complete washout! With both captains agreeing that the foursomes would be shared it was down to a 18 hole singles sprint.
On a blustery and muggy day at Shirehampton golf club the singles matches were always going to be a tight result and so it proved.
Oscar Sharp led the way with a great win beating Matt Pearson 4/2 but Somerset responded winning the 2nd match 3/2. With Paul Garland gaining a battling half in match 3 it was all very tight. Match 4 was a very close affair with Jake Phillips narrowly losing on the final green. In match 5 past captain Nigel Thompson came through to win 4/3.
After 5 matches it was all square and in match 6 Somerset crept ahead winning 3/2 over Reece Johnson! But a great fight-back from Louis O’Regan who was 1 down with 2 to play he gained a valuable half point that kept Gloucestershire alive.
Mike Day played excellent golf in match 9 to win 4/3 and then Sam McPherson won his final 2 holes to gain a vital win to ensure that Gloucestershire’s worst result would be a halved match.
With 1 match on the course it was down to home player Sam Payne to bring home that final half or win that Gloucestershire needed. Sam was 1up with 3 to play but Miles Angel of Somerset won 16 & 17 to go 1up, a lead he didn’t let slip and he won 1up for a overall halved match.
A great effort from the players! The salver is still up for grabs. Many thanks for Shirehampton for a warm welcome! The course was in excellent condition and the food was great as well.
